England dominated day one of the Wankhede Test at Mumbai thanks to an impressive hundred on debut by opener Keaton Jennings. His 112 saw England finish the opening day on a highly competitive 288 for 5, in a definite position of ascendancy, especially if they can build on it. Here are some significant numbers from the opening day’s play.

Keaton Jennings’ 112 is now the highest score by a visiting opener on Test debut in India. Before him, Gordon Greenidge made 107 at Bangalore in 1974, Alastair Cook made an unbeaten 104 at Nagpur in 2006 while Alviro Peterson slammed 100 at Kolkata in 2010.

A total of eight England openers have now scored a century on debut. Before Jennings, Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook hit hundreds on debut. Not surprisingly, WG Grace was the first England opener to hit a hundred on debut. He made 152 against Australia at The Oval back in September 1880.

Moving away from openers, Jonathan Trott was the last England batsman to score a hundred on Test debut. He smashed a hundred against Australia at The Oval in 2009.

Jennings has now become the ninth player overall from England to make a debut century away from home. Three of these nine have actually come in India. Bryan Valentine was the first to do in against India in 1933, followed by Cook and now Jennings. Interestingly, Nawab of Pataudi senior is also on the list. He made an hundred playing for England against Australia at Sydney in December 1932.

England skipper Alastair Cook has been having a pretty poor series from his standards. Apart from the 130 at Rajkot in the second innings, his scores read 21, 2, 54, 27, 12 and now 46 on Thursday.

Joe Root has scored at least a fifty in each of the first three Tests – 124 at Rajkot, 53 at Vizag and 78 at Mohali. He fell for 21 in the first innings at Mumbai. He will have to cross fifty in the second innings to maintain his record. Root scored a half-century in the loss to Bangladesh at Dhaka as well.

With four wickets on the opening day, Ravichandran Ashwin now has 239 Test scalps to his name. During the course of the day, he went past Javagal Srinath’s tally of 236 wickets. He is now the seventh highest wicket-taker for India in Test matches. Anil Kumble (619), Kapil Dev (434), Harbhajan Singh (417), Zaheer Khan (311), Bishen Bedi (266) and Bhagwath Chandrasekhar (242) are ahead of him.

England skipper Alastair Cook became the sixth batsman to score 2000 runs against India, and the first from England. Ricky Ponting, Clive Lloyd, Javed Miandad, Shivanarine Chanderpaul and Michael Clarke are the others with 2000 plus runs against the Indians in the Test format.
