England crush Sri Lanka Board President XI by an innings victory

Sri Lanka Board XI Vs England XI, 3-day Practice Match at R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo (March 15-12, 2012)

England XI today defeated the Sri Lanka Board XI in a 3-day warm-up match at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo by an innings and 15 runs. It was a good work out for the England bowlers though most of its batsmen failed to get going.

Batting first after winning the toss, the homeside led by Wicket Keeper Prasanna Jayawardene was bowled out for just 169 in the first innings. Opener Ashen Silva top scored with 66 (from 179 balls with 8 fours). For the tourists, James Anderson claimed 4 for 19 in 11 overs and left-arm-spinner Monty Panesar came up with dream figures of 5 for 37 in 23.3 overs.

Alastair CookEngland thanks to Alastair Cook’s 163 (from 293 balls with 11 fours) declared its first innings at 303 for 8. Apart from Cook, Andrew Strauss with 40 and Kevin Pietersen with 39 could manage some time out in the middle. The chief wicket taker for the Sri Lanka Board XI was leg-spinner Malinga Bandara with 3 for 58.

The tourists having taken a first innings lead of 134 runs bundled out the Sri Lanka Board XI for a paltry 119 for an innings victory. At one stage, the Board XI was in shambles at 63 for 7! The wicket takers for England in the second innings were James Anderson, Steven Finn and Graeme Swann with all of them claiming three wickets each.
